Heat Pump for a Home Office or Hard-to-Heat Room
Every house has its "problem" room: the office at the end of the hallway where you freeze in winter, the room over the garage that turns into an oven in July, the finished attic where nobody wants to sleep in summer. The house thermostat is elsewhere, and turning up the heat everywhere for one room is expensive. A dedicated mini-split heat pump fixes that specific room without changing the rest of the house.
Why some rooms are always uncomfortable
- Room over the garage: its floor sits above a cold garage, and it often has more exterior walls than an ordinary room. It is cold in winter and hot in summer.
- Finished attic: under the roof, heat rises and the sun heats the roofing. Knee walls and sloped ceilings leave little space for insulation.
- Office at the end of the duct run: far from the furnace or central heat pump, the room gets little air.
- Computer equipment: computers and screens add heat, making a closed office uncomfortable in summer while the rest of the house is cool.
Why a DIY mini-split is a good fit
A wall unit controls the room's temperature with its own remote and, on Kanartic models, with the Wi-Fi app. You can heat the office only during working hours, or cool the bedroom an hour before going to bed. The inverter compressor holds the temperature to within about half a degree, without the swings of a baseboard or a window air conditioner. At 22 dB, the indoor unit stays discreet during a video call or at night.
The DIY format suits a single room well: one hole in the exterior wall, a pre-charged line set with quick connectors, an outdoor unit on a bracket. No vacuum pump, no refrigeration tools.
Which system to choose
A small, well-insulated room doesn't have the same needs as a room over a garage or an attic under a dark roof. Run the numbers with the free BTU calculator, specifying the room's insulation and exposure.
- Small, well-insulated office: the ZERO DIY 9,000 BTU, 16 ft line set or its 25 ft line set version. It does not qualify for LogisVert.
- Room over the garage or exposed office: the ZERO DIY 12,000 BTU, eligible for LogisVert with commissioning in Québec.
- Open finished attic: the ZERO DIY 12,000 BTU, 25 ft line set or the ZERO DIY 18,000 BTU, 25 ft line set; the longer line set helps reach an outdoor unit on the ground.
- Several rooms upstairs: the Z-PRO DIY 18,000 BTU 2 zones or a Z-PRO DIY 36,000 BTU 4 zones gives one unit per room.
Installation points
Indoor unit location
In an office, avoid blowing directly on the workstation: place the unit on the exterior wall, offset from the desk. In an attic, use a knee wall or a gable wall high enough to respect the manual's clearances. In a bedroom, avoid the wall behind the headboard.
Line set and outdoor unit for an upstairs room
When the room is upstairs, the outdoor unit can sit on the ground, on a 4-leg ground stand, or on the wall, on a stainless steel wall bracket, keeping access for maintenance in mind. The line set runs down the wall under an aluminum line set cover. Measure the full route before choosing between the 16 ft and 25 ft line sets.
Condensate
Upstairs, the drain usually runs down by gravity with the line set. If the unit is on an interior wall, add a Kanartic ultra-slim condensate pump.
Electrical
The dedicated circuit runs from the panel to the outdoor unit, with a disconnect. This work must be done by an electrician.
All the steps are described in the complete DIY installation guide.
Rebates
A habitable room inside the insulated envelope can qualify for LogisVert in Québec, with an outdoor unit of at least 12,000 BTU/h and commissioning by an RBQ-licensed company. The program excludes indoor units installed outside the insulation envelope, for example in an unfinished attic: a finished, insulated attic is not in that case. Frequently asked questions
Can a heat pump fix a single room that is too hot?
Yes. A dedicated wall unit cools or heats the room to its own set point, without changing the temperature in the rest of the house.
What capacity for a room over the garage?
It depends on floor insulation, the number of exterior walls and the windows. The BTU calculator accounts for these factors; don't rely on floor area alone.
Is the indoor unit quiet enough for an office?
Kanartic indoor units go down to 22 dB, a level suited to an office or a bedroom.
Can the unit be installed in an unfinished attic?
It isn't recommended, and LogisVert excludes indoor units installed outside the insulation envelope. Install the unit in the habitable room.
Can I control the room remotely?
Yes, Kanartic models are controlled by remote and by Wi-Fi app, so you can start heating or cooling before you walk in.
